oh those kids

I do child care in my home and yesterday was too funny I have a 4 year old girl and her brother that is 2. So the 4 year old was showing me how she likes to bend her head down and make her hair flip down over her face and then "swiiiing" it back over to her back. She asked me to do it so of course I did it too and she and her brother laughed and laughed well then all of the sudden her brother who has been sitting across the room watching us do this whole swing our hair over our face and back to the back again thing decides he wants to try it, and he reaches up and grabs what little hair he has and says Dena its stuck, its stuck. Now I know this is one of those times that it was way funnier if you was actually here to see it. So as Im typing this Im still getting a chuckle out of it!!! Well anyway his big sister who thinks at 4 years old she knows it all tells him he can't do it. So he comes to me as serious as can be and says Dena it all fall off (meaning his hair of course) I said oh no it all fall off??? And he looked at me as if he wanted cry. Made me so sad I almost wanted to give him some of my hair..hehehe anyway his sister says to him. Jason it didnt fall off dont you remember dad cut it off!!!! And then she looked at me and said Dena tell Jason that your hair can't fall off!!! Oh kids...this is exactly one of the many reasons I just love being with kids they always find a way to make you smile. I started my day off yesterday feeling all sad but before it was over I was smiling and laughing and so glad that I do what I do for a living because even though I have the role to make a diference in their little lives they truly make a difference in mine as well!!!

Children have such a unique way of looking at the world, and I've always tried to hold onto that perception as I mature and grow older. I think an excerpt of my blog from thanksgiving can explain what i mean best.

As we were finishing reminiscing, the song "believe" by Josh Groban came on the iphone. I've always liked this song ever since I've heard it, especially at this time of year. I love to believe in impossible things, magical things and places that could theoretically exist. I love to use my imagination, and I think it's a lost art in this day and age. I see so many people who don't believe anything magical or amazing happens in their lives. They call me immature, and that I should grow up when I share the magic I find in my life. Now, of course I don't mean that my wife and I go troucing through Narnia through a portal in our closet (would be neat though). Just that if your open to it you can see amazing things and appreciate them. It's these little moments that let you escape the daily drudgery, especially this time of year, where these moments are plentiful but often overlooked. Covered up by shopping needs, family get-togethers, and other obligations. It's easy to see how things get lost. What moments am I talking about? Like the moment I had on Friday right after "unfolding" my tree. when I saw the lights come on for the first time. I just had to sit and stare at it while I petted my cat. It reminded me of all those times I'd come down and see the tree that my parents had put up after I went to bed. Or come home from school, and see the house lit up with xmas lights for the first time. It's these little moments in life that I love to cherish. That feeling that comes so easily for children, and somehow slips away as you grow older.

Two quotes from the short lived show young americans kinda sum that feeling up for me:

“When exactly do we go from being children to being just people? I do know it's not about turning a certain age or graduating from school. It happens when we’re not paying attention. We go from playing with our friends, to playing with our friends’ feelings.

"Without our knowledge or consent, childhood slips away in the night, and our innocence escapes us. And we wake up one morning to find we have become, who we are.” William Krudski

“People say we’re growing up too fast. Sometimes they make it sound like it's our fault or at least, our choice, but how can we not? We feel invincible when we know so much. One thing I do know is that we're so eager to lose our innocence. And I wonder if one day we'll look back and wish we hadn't?" William Krudski

I of course don't mean that I want to be a forever child, certainly not. I am a responsible adult, and I plan to continue on that way. But there has got to be a happy middle ground between paying your bills on time, walking the dog, taking out the trash, and still having that little spark of joy hit you on Christmas morning. Or when snow falls for the first time in your area. Until next time, I urge you to find the magic in your life, and celebrate it.

As being a mother of two small kids myself, I can totally see the whole thing and it is hilarious. If there's anything to curing a bad day, its a child's laughter.
