So the other day I was listening to the news on tv as I was washing the dishes and I heard them talking about a boy that had shot and killed his fathers pregnant girl friend and how he was going to be held on two counts of murder, one for the death of the girl friend and one for the unborn baby. This got me to thinking, how is it that if someone kills a pregnant woman that it is possible for them to be charged with TWO counts of murder and yet there are woman every day, approximately 3,700 everyday in the USA alone, that go and have abortions which in my estimation is the same as killing an unborn baby. I do not understand this!!
Can anyone help me to make sense of this????
I realize that this is one of those subjects that is very touchy with some people...but I will not apologize for my own feelings. I just do not believe in abortion and when I heard about this case it just made me stop and wonder how the laws can change for the situations and yet they both are basically the same crime.

You raise a very good point here. One that I am sure will make quite a few people stop and think.
Dena,
The first part of my comment is not a personal response, nor a personal opinion. It is merely a legal response to your question. Morally and ethically, there might be any number of reactions and replies from your readers.
It depends on the term of the pregnancy. Abortion laws allow for termination up to a certain time frame. Prior to that, the child is not considered a person by law. After that, the baby is "legally" considered a viable human being and cannot be aborted.
The same applies to criminal murder charges. After a certain time frame, the baby is considered "legally" viable and is therefore seen as a separate human being capable of being murdered.
While this might not sit well with you, it is a legal explanation for why abortion is not seen as murder, but killing a pregnant woman is.
With that being said (legally), I personally share your view on abortion and do not believe that any pregnancy should be ended unless it is medically required to save the mother's life. However, I'm sure as you well know, that this may generate quite a number of differing viewpoints.
Hope this helps.
I'd like to know the answer to that question too! In my mind there is NO difference between someone else killing the unborn child and the woman carrying the child that has an abortion...they're both murderers in my eyes!
I totally agree. It doesn't make much sense, does it...
